Understand the engine oil standard: Which one is the right one for your car?
“Engine oil” is very important to the operation of an engine. It helps lubricate and protect the engine while also improving efficiency and prolonging the service life of the engine.
Choosing the right engine oil for the vehicle you are using is, therefore, highly important. In addition to considering the type of engine, type of an engine oil and viscosity grade, you also need to consider the standard of engine oil so that your car can run at its fullest potential.
But what does each engine oil standard stand for? Today, PTT Lubricants help you understand more about these engine oil standards so that you can drive with more confidence. Scroll down to learn more!
API
Abbreviated from American Petroleum Institute or the Petroleum Institute of the United States of America, API is an institute that sets standards for engine oil. To be qualified by this standard, an engine oil will need to undergo a quality testing for lubricating, cooling, cleaning abilities and other aspects related to engine oil.
The letters following the API organization name indicate the type of engines that are suitable for use as follows:
• S = Standard for gasoline engine eg. SA, SB, the latest standard of this category is API SP
• C = Standard for heavy duty diesel engine eg. CA, CB the latest standard of this category is API CK-4
• F = Standard for heavy duty diesel engine with fuel economy property, the latest standard of this category is API FA-4
- The engine oil with a newer standard can be used to replace older one. For example, API SP standard engine oil can be used in engines that require API SN standard engine oil, etc.
ACEA
ACEA stands for European Automobile Manufacturers Association.
The letters following the organization name ACEA indicate the type of engines that are suitable for use as follows:
• A = Standard for gasoline engines with no exhaust particulate filters (Gasoline Particulate Filter, GPF)
• B = Standard for light duty diesel engines with no exhaust particulate filters (Diesel Particulate Filter, DPF)
• C = Standard for light duty gasoline and diesel engines equipped with GPF and DPF exhaust particulate filters.
• E = Standard for heavy duty diesel engine
JASO
JASO stands for Japanese Automotive Standards Organization. This organization is established by a group of automobile manufacturers in Japan.
The letters following the JASO organization name indicate the type of engines that are suitable for use. The standard is divided into 2 groups for diesel engines and motorcycles.
For diesel engines
• CC/CD = Standard for old Japanese trucks
• DH-1 = Standard for new Japanese trucks
• DH-2/DL-1 = Standard for new Japanese trucks/pickups equipped with an exhaust aftertreatment system
For motorcycle
• MA1/MA2 = Standard for manual transmission with wet clutch
• MB = Standard for automatic transmission with dry clutch
That concludes the differences of the engine oil standards. If you have read up to this point, you can now choose the right engine oil that is suitable for your car!
