Answering one of the most frequently asked questions: When is the best time to change coolant?

The radiator and coolant are two things that help cool your car’s engine down. When the engine is running, the coolant will carry heat from the engine parts to the radiator panel and release the heat to the outside air. When the heat is released and the coolant temperature drops, it will flow back to the engine parts and retake the heat.

Coolant is a liquid that circulates in the cooling system and is used to fill the radiator to control the temperature of the engine so that it does not become too high. Coolant can also contribute to the prevention of rust and corrosion inside the radiator panel and other waterways around the engine parts.

But when is the best time to change the coolant to prevent any danger that can happen to the car? Today, PTT Lubricants is here to answer this question. If you are ready, let’s scroll down to learn more!

Change the coolant at the specified distance or interval as recommended by the car service manual

Changing the coolant at the intervals specified by each model's manual is one of the proper ways to do so. The changing intervals and distances may vary between different models and manufacturers.

For passenger cars, the recommended changing distance is approximately 60,000 - 150,000 kilometers or around 3-10 years, whichever comes first.

These different changing intervals mostly depend on the quality of the coolant, thecapacity of the cooling system, and conditions and driving environment.

However, some of the liquid can evaporate during use and cause the coolant level to decrease. This will also affect the cooling efficiency of the coolant. Therefore, it is recommended to frequently check the coolant level even when the changing interval is not reached.

Change the coolant according to the condition of the coolant

If you check the radiator and find that the coolant has:

  • a change in color
  • faded color
  • dregs
  • become cloudy or muddy as rust sludge has accumulated
  • has other abnormal appearances or substances mixed in

It is recommended to have the entire radiator cleaned and change the coolant right away as these stains can cause blockages in the radiator's heat panel. If the heat panel is clogged, it will be unable to efficiently dissipate heat.

Coolant can be divided into 2 types:

1. Premixed coolant that can be used right away

The premixed coolant is available in the form of depletion filling and the entire system flushing.

2. Concentrated coolant

The concentrated coolant must be mixed with clean water at the ratio recommended by the manual before use.

It is recommended to regularly check the condition of both the radiator and the car to prevent danger while driving. This can also help extend the service life of your beloved car too!
