Watch out for the tire explosion! Let’s learn more about the causes before it gets fatal.
A tire explosion is an unexpected accident that occurs without any notice. This makes it difficult for the driver to control the situation as they are caught off guard when the car starts moving abnormally. When a tire does explode, it can cause accidents that are dangerous to both the driver and others. Therefore, it is important to know how to handle and solve problems so that the tire explosion will not happen again.
Today, PTT Lubricants will help you explore the causes of a tire explosion and ways to deal with it to minimize the danger as much as possible for the safety of the driver and others on the road. Let’s see what we have for you!
The causes of a tire explosion
1. Overheated tire
This occurs when one of the brakes becomes stuck on a wheel, which can even lead to a fire. Another cause of an overheated tire is using the wrong size or type of tires, such as putting sedan tires on a pickup truck. In some cases, an overheated tire can also result from the tire's sidewall rubbing against the road's edge until it becomes overheated.
2. Tires were not properly inflated by the specified standards
When a tire pressure is either too much or too little, long driving can generate excessive heat around the tire sidewall, leading to a tear on the sidewall. This can also make the car consume more fuel as well.
3. Carrying overweight load
Exceeding the specified weight limit is another cause of a tire explosion as the tire will not be able to bear the excess weight and end up exploding.
4. Exceeding speed limit
Driving at a speed exceeding the tire's limits increases the risk of a tire explosion because the heat generated around the tires rises with speed. This can lead to a loss of control over the vehicle and result in an accident.
5. Expired tire
If your tire appears to be cracked, swollen, torn, or the tread is distinctively worn out, it indicates that the tire has reached the end of its service life. It is recommended to have that tire replaced right away before any accident occurs.
Warning signs before a tire explosion
If the car starts shaking for no apparent reason or becomes difficult to control, especially during turns, it may indicate that the tires are overheating and beginning to swell. At this point, the car may run slower, shake back-and-forth, or produce abnormal sounds like wind noise or the sound of tires grinding against the road. All of these signs suggest that the tires are deteriorating and are close to exploding.
4 Ways to manage when a tire explodes
1. Hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands
When a tire explodes, the car will lose balance. The first thing to do is to hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands and try to control the sway of the car.
2. Slowly reduce the speed
Slowly take your foot off the accelerator while keeping your hand firmly on the steering wheel. Then, start braking frequently and gently. DO NOT depress the clutch or use the handbrake during this time as the car can go out of control and crash.
3. Signal to park
When the speed begins to decrease and gets under control, signal your lights and go to the side of the road so others can be careful of your car.
4. Shift to a lower gear to stop the vehicle
When the speed of the car is in control, shift to a lower gear and slowly stop the car on the side of the road.
Most importantly, don’t forget to regularly check the condition of your car's tires, choose quality tires that are appropriate for your vehicle, and always drive at an appropriate speed for your safety. With care from PTT Lubricants💙
