5 Steps to safely drive up and downhill so that you can reach any mountain!

Experiencing nature in the mountains can be a great idea during this cold weather. In fact, it is already one of the most popular winter activities. However, in case you are not familiar with the route or are a rookie driver who has never driven uphill or downhill before, it can be dangerous if you don't know how to drive properly.

Today, PTT Lubricants is here to share with you 5 simple tricks to safely and easily go up and downhill so that you can drive like a pro no matter where you go! Let’s see what the tricks are.

5 tricks to safely drive up and downhill

1. Control the car’s speed

Controlling the speed of the vehicle to maintain an appropriate level is highly important when driving uphill, downhill, or through curves on mountain routes. It is not recommended to increase the car's speed during downhill driving since the speed can already be high even without acceleration. When driving uphill and going through long curves, it is recommended to be cautious and maintain a slower speed for safety. Most importantly, the driver must always control the accelerator pedal, avoiding both excessive and insufficient pressure to prevent excessive engine heat.

2. Use the proper gear

When going on a route that is very steep, the car may not have enough power to continue going up the mountain. In this case, it is better to switch to a lower gear according to the level of the slope. The recommended gear would be 1st or 2nd gear for a manual transmission and D2, D3, S, L gear for an automatic transmission.

As for driving downhill or down a steep slope, remember to NOT put the car in neutral or N gear and let the car go down the mountain freely as it will cause the car to run at an excessive speed and become difficult to control. It is advisable to use a lower gear to help slow down the speed of the car instead.

3. DO NOT riding the brake while going downhill

Continuously braking when going downhill can generate excessive heat from the brake pads repeatedly rubbing against the brake disc. This can lead to the burning of the brake pads and brake discs to the extent that they cannot be used. Therefore, when driving downhill, it is recommended to use a lower gear and always remember to brake only when necessary. NEVER ride on the brake pedal.

4. Be careful of the curves

Most of the routes up and down the mountain can be narrow, curvy, or winding. Therefore, it is not recommended to drive at high speeds or tailgate the car in front. Instead, maintain some braking distance for your own safety. When going through a sharp curve, you should honk to signal the cars in front, indicating that you are passing in the opposite lane. Additionally, it is crucial not to enter another lane while turning as this may lead to collision with another car approaching from the opposite direction.

5. DO NOT overtake

As mountain routes mostly consist of curves, you should NEVER overtake another car. The main reason is that overtaking may result in a collision with a vehicle coming from another side if you fail to do so. In the worst case, you may even fall off the curve by doing so.

That concludes all 5 tricks to drive up and downhill from us today! Simply follow them and everyone can drive safely. Remember to always be cautious and drive with care. Also, don't forget to check the condition of your car every time before you leave. With care from PTT Lubricants 💙
