Can engine oil expire?

Engine oil is an important tool that helps prevent engine wear and allows the engine to work at its full efficiency. When used, it will begin to deteriorate over time. Therefore, it is crucial to regularly check the condition of the engine oil and have it changed when reaching the distance specified by the manual.

What about the engine oil that we don't use? Will it deteriorate or expire too? Today, PTT Lubricants will help you answer these questions!

How do we know if the engine oil has expired?

Expired engine oil can be identified through these 2 points:

• If the bottle hasn’t been opened and the packaging remains in perfect condition, that engine oil has a shelf life of 5 years from the date of manufacture.

• If the bottle has been opened, but there is still some engine oil remaining in the package, it is recommended to close the lid tightly and store it in an area not exposed to heat. However, engine oil should not be kept for more than one year from the day it is opened as it has already been exposed to air and oxygen.

There are 2 more ways to determine if the engine oil has expired, which are:

1. The color of the engine oil

If the engine oil has already expired, the color of the engine oil will become darker and appear cloudy, which is different from its appearance before expiration. Typically, an engine oil has a bright amber color, varying with the type of that engine oil.

2. Appearance of the engine oil

A regular engine oil should appear clear and translucent. It also has to flow with a constant viscosity. Any signs of darkening, cloudiness, layer separation, or dirt deposits may indicate that it is deteriorating. Also, if that engine oil has been stored for a long period, it is recommended to shake the bottle well before use.

Engine oil is an important tool that must be checked regularly and changed at the intervals specified by the manual. If you overlook the regular checkup and continue to use an expired engine oil with your beloved car, the consequences may be bigger than you think.
