Easy ways to understand the engine oil labels

Choosing the right engine oil not only helps protect your engine but also increases efficiency and extends the service life of your car. To help you make the best choice, PTT Lubricants will share with you some easy ways to understand these engine oil labels. Let’s learn more about the meaning behind the numbers, letters, and various information on every label!

1. Engine oil type

PTT Lubricants has been developing our products to support all types of engines. Our products are mainly divided into 3 categories for different applications, which are:

PERFORMA is engine oil series for gasoline engines

DYNAMIC is engine oil series  for diesel engines

CHALLENGER is engine oil series for motorcycles

2. Viscosity Grade (SAE)

The viscosity grade of engine oil, also known as SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), is an important number that indicates how well the engine oil will flow at different temperatures.

What is SAE XW-XX?

SAE numbers regularly come in two sets, such as 10W-30.

The first number (10W) indicates flowing ability in low temperature (W = Winter). The lower the number, the better the oil will flow in cold weather.

The second number (30) indicates flowing ability in high temperature. The higher the number, the thicker the oil film becomes.

3. The technologies featured in the engine oil

PTT Lubricants has introduced a new lubricant formula powered by The EVOTEC Technology that is developed to support all aspects of future performance, or the 3Es, including:

  • Environment: Reduces emissions of pollution and carbon dioxide to promote better and cleaner environment for a sustainable future

  • Endurance: Cleans dirt and protects the engine for maximum durability in all driving conditions, including heavy use and long operation

  • Efficiency: Increases driving performance to full power in every acceleration while providing maximum fuel economy

4. Certified Standard

Quality engine oil should be certified by recognized standards to ensure its efficiency and suitability for use.

  • API Standard (American Petroleum Institute)

This standard is mainly divided into 2 categories, which are:

S : The former letter, S, indicates that the engine oil is for gasoline engines, such as: API SM, SL, SN, SP. The latter letter, such as N, indicates a higher quality of engine oil in alphabetical order. API SP is the latest standard.

C : The first letter, C, indicates that the engine oil should be used with diesel engines. For example, API CF-4, CH-4, CI-4, CK-4.

The second letter indicates the quality of the engine oil. The latter letter after C indicate, the higher the quality of the engine oil. API CK-4 is the latest standard.

The number on the back indicates the type of engine that is compatible with this engine oil. For example, 4 means 4-stroke diesel engines.

Understanding engine oil labels is not difficult as long as you know the important information such as engine oil type, viscosity grade, manufacturing technology and certified standards.

Remember that choosing the right engine oil not only helps protect your engine but also increases efficiency and extends the service life of your car. With PTT Lubricants, you can always be confident about the quality of the engine oil.
