Understanding the API standard of engine oil
Have you ever wondered what the long letters and numbers on the side of the engine oil bottle that look like secret codes stand for mean? PTT Lubricants will help you decode these numbers of the API standard and make choosing engine oil so much easier!
What is API?
API stands for the American Petroleum Institute, which is an organization that establishes global standards for engine oil grading to define the application and technology of each type of engine oil.
API standard is mainly divided into 2 categories, which are:
- S for gasoline engine
- C for diesel engine
How to read the API numbers on an engine oil bottle
The letters following the API name will indicate the engine type and the oil grade, which are:
- S = for gasoline engine, such as:
- SA, SB obsolete standard
- SP is the most current standard designed for modern technology engines with Turbo-GDI direct injection for better efficiency in engine protection and cleanliness. This standard has also been tested for Low Speed Pre-ignition (LSPI) and timing chain elongation to ensure additional protection for modern engines.
- C = for heavy duty diesel engines, such as:
- CA, CB obsolete standard
- CK-4 is the most current standard designed to extend the life of Diesel Exhaust After-treatment (DPF). It is suitable for high performance diesel engines and can support engines of up to the Euro 5 emission standard.
Understanding the meaning of the API standard is important in choosing the right engine oil for your vehicle. PTT Lubricants is here to provide guidance and help you choose the engine oil that best meets your needs for smoother and safer ride!
