What does hot oil deterioration mean?

What is hot oil and why it deteriorates?

Hot oil is a specialized oil used in the heat transfer systems of an industrial machine. Its main role is to efficiently transfer heat from the source to the required components. However, over time, hot oil can degrade, reducing its heat transferring ability and causing carbon deposits to build up within the system. This buildup can lead to equipment damage and higher maintenance costs.

Deterioration of the hot oil can be caused by two main factors.

1. Oxidation

As hot oil used in an open system is exposed to oxygen and moisture in the air, oxidation may occur and result in:

  • Increase in oil viscosity

  • Dirt and deposits accumulation within the oil

  • Sludge build-up in pipes and equipment within the system

2. Thermal Cracking

If the hot oil is overheated, the oil molecules may break down, causing:

  • Decrease in oil viscosity

  • Decrease in oil flash point which can induce higher risk of ignition

  • Sludge build-up in the system, reducing the heat transferring ability

How to prevent hot oil premature deterioration?

To extend the service life of the hot oil and maintain the efficiency of the heat transfer system, it is recommended to:

✅ Avoid using the oil at temperatures above the specified level

✅ Regularly check and maintain the system to ensure proper oil circulation

✅ Use high-quality hot oil that is resistant to oxidation and heat

✅ Regularly inspect the oil quality (at least once a year) to evaluate the deterioration
