Battery fluid  VS Normal water: Are they really interchangeable?

Drivers know how much of a chaos it is when the car’s battery fluid dries up while driving.  It’s even worse if the driver does not  have a battery fluid refill with them and can’t find one nearby . Here comes the frequently asked question: “Can we  just use normal water instead?”,or some may even ask if the battery fluid is “drinkable”?

To answer these questions, let’s check out the differences between battery fluid  and normal water.  Are they really interchangeable?

First of all, let’s be clear that battery fluid  has a mildly  acidic property which  enhances the battery acid performance. Moreover, battery fluid is ideal for car battery (lead-acid type) refills  as it is pure and free from any contaminants such as heavy metals and ions. Therefore, normal water such as tap water or drinking water (RO) that contains metal ions and other impurities should not be added to car batteries.

Although these minerals may be beneficial to the human body, it has more harm than good for car batteries  including shortening the battery life, reducing the battery performance and affecting the battery voltage as well.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the water in the battery, after being used for a while, will begin to decrease from chemical reaction with the lead plates at the battery terminals, resulting in the evaporation of water into steam. After the evaporation, the remaining water in the battery will have stronger acidity to the point that it is dangerous and cannot be directly touched by flesh.

Therefore, when the fluid in the battery dries up or reduces, it is best to avoid using  normal water or other types of fluid to refill the battery, except in an emergency only. Normal water may negatively affect the battery's performance and lead to deterioration of the battery. In addition, do check the acid level in the battery regularly and make sure it is still within the normal range and not too low, otherwise the battery life can also be shortened.

For those who want to avoid all the hassles of dry battery fluid we recommend that you do monthly checks and refills. You should also have  a battery fluid refill  in your car in case of an emergency. And of course, don't forget to look for high quality BATTERY FLUID from PTT Lubricants  for a peace of mind 💙
