Heavy car steering or hard turning? Check the power steering fluid!

Some of the frequently asked questions about power steering fluid are “How do we choose the right power steering fluid that fits our car?” and “Can we fill the power steering system with automatic transmission fluid in case that the power steering fluid level becomes too low, deteriorated, or there’s a leakage in the system? Today, PTT Lubricants will answer all these questions!

What is the power steering system?

First of all, let's understand the Power Steering System. This system has been installed in cars for a long time to help relieve the force when turning or steering in different directions. It delivers easier and more comfortable vehicle turning and controlling for drivers. Although the system is commonly used in old cars, it is also installed in some new models, namely hydraulic power steering, which requires the use of powering oil. “Power Steering Fluid (PSF)” is used as a medium to transfer power in the system to keep the power steering system working while protecting system components from wear, rust and corrosion. However, many modern cars these days have switched to electric power steering, power transmission oil is thus no longer needed.

Heavy car steering problem or hard turning

For a car that uses the hydraulic power steering system, once it gets old and has higher mileage, problems such as "heavy car steering or hard turning" may arise. The driver has to exert more effort to turn the steering wheel than usual resulting in slower response for the  vehicle’s direction control. Heavy car steering can occur from many reasons, such as low power steering fluid level, leaking in the system, deteriorated fluid, worn out hydraulic pump (Power Steering Pump) and pinion gear, etc. However, car users like us can perform basic maintenance for the power steering system by regularly checking the power steering fluid level according to the distance specified by the car manual, then refill when it is low. You can also change the fluid throughout the system when the color becomes darker or the color appears abnormal due to deterioration and contamination.

Can automatic transmission fluid be used to fill in the power steering system?

Many of you may wonder how to choose the right power steering fluid for your car? and Can "automatic transmission fluid" or ATF be added to the power steering system?

The answer is “in most car models, yes, you can use automatic transmission fluid to fill in the power steering system.” It is recommended to use automatic transmission fluid that meets the quality standards and viscosity range specified in the manual for each vehicle model. The standard for automatic transmission fluid that most car manufacturers recommend to use directly or can be used as a replacement for transmission fluid in the power steering system are such as DEXRON II, DEXRON III and DEXRON VI, etc.

However, some car manufacturers have also set specific standards for power steering fluid. You, therefore, should choose the power steering fluid according to the specification written in the manual of that car model to prevent damage and keep the power steering system working efficiently for a long time.

The automatic transmission fluid in the AUTOMAT series from PTT Lubricants that can be used to fill with hydraulic power steering systems are available in 3 choices, which are:

📌AUTOMAT ATF LV-1

It is a specially high quality fully synthetic automatic transmission oil which has low viscosity. The AUTOMAT ATF LV-1 is recommended for power steering systems requiring DEXRON VI standard of automatic transmission fluid.
