A must-know for drivers: How to handle the stuck accelerator pedal?
Road accidents can happen at any time, especially when we are unprepared. One of the causes that can lead to an accident is when the accelerator pedal gets stuck. This can happen for a number of reasons, whether by a car system malfunction or the mistake of the driver themselves.
Today, PTT Lubricants has techniques on how to deal with the stuck accelerator pedal. Remember to not panic. Just follow these steps and you will be able to control the situation correctly and safely. Let's see what you should do!
1. Remain calm
If you can remain calm and maintain your focus on the road ahead, you will be able to steer the car in the safest direction.
2. Immediately shift the gear to neutral (N)
If your car is an automatic transmission, tap on the brake pedal and shift the gear to neutral (N) position to cut off the engine power. In case of a manual transmission car, step on the clutch pedal and switch to neutral position immediately.
3. Step on the brake pedal properly
If it's an automatic transmission car, tap on the brake pedal to gradually slow down the speed. For a car with ABS braking system, tap on the brake pedal and try to control the car towards a safe area to park, then turn off the engine accordingly.
If it's a manual transmission car, step on the clutch pedal and switch to neutral gear position. After that, hold the steering wheel firmly and steer the car slowly to the side of the road. While doing so, maintain gradual taps on the brake pedal, then turn off the engine accordingly.
In case of an emergency where you cannot break in time, navigate your car towards the area that is strong enough to stop the car. Don’t forget to make sure that where you hit has no passengers or pedestrians.
4. Turn on the emergency lights for safety
When the car is parked on the side of the road orin a safe area, turn the engine off and turn on the emergency lights immediately. It is a warning signal to other vehicles so that they can be careful. Then, call for help from the relevant agencies.
Warning
1. While driving, DO NOT suddenly step on the brake pedal entirely. If the wheels stop immediately while the car is running at a high speed, the car will spin and lose control, causing more severe accidents.
2. While driving, DO NOT turn off the engine. If the engine is turned off immediately, the power steering will not work resulting in more difficult steering and direction control of the car. Also, turning off the engine immediately will harden the brake pedal and you will not be able to to slow down or stop the car.
Now that you know these techniques, if you ever get into such an incident, be sure to implement them to minimize the potential damage. It is important to regularly check the condition of the car and ensure that there are no obstacles in the driver's footwell areas. That will help reduce the chance of accidents, with care from PTT Lubricants
