All the automatic transmission drivers must take notes! What are the differences between S and D mode in automatic transmission and when to use them?
Automatic transmission has been gaining more popularity these days due to their ease and convenience while driving. However, many car users may still be confused or not familiar with choosing the right gear position for different driving conditions.
Today, PTT Lubricants brought to you the differences between the S and D mode and when to use them so that you can use both gears properly and appropriately!
S (Sport)
S mode or sport mode is a mode where the engine runs at a higher revolution than D mode, increasing the car's acceleration. The increased acceleration will make you feel more fun to drive and more agile. However, the disadvantage of the S mode is that it consumes more fuel and increases the load on the engine as well as the risk of wear from working at high revolution.
When to use the S mode?
- When you want to increase speed and acceleration for an instant overtaking. By changing to the S gear, the engine will run at higher revolution and it will improve the acceleration response. Therefore, when overtaking, just a light touch on the accelerator can easily send power from the engine to accelerate the car.
- When you have to drive up and down steep slopes, such as hilly roads. If you are driving up a steep slope or up a hill in S mode, it will help slow down the gear shift and give the car more power on steep paths. When driving downhill on the other hand, the S mode will slow down the car, relieving the driver from constant braking. This can prevent brake burns or the problem with the car not braking while going downhill that may cause serious harm.
Note: The S mode (Sport) can only be found in certain car models or brands.
D (Drive)
D mode or forward gear is a gear position that covers all driving styles. For this mode, the car will change the gear ratio in relation to the engine RPM. Therefore, if you are a person who drives at a normal speed and takes a normal route, using D mode is already sufficient and safe.
- When you are driving normally to move the car forward. No matter how fast or slow it moves, the car can be controlled safely and confidently under this mode.
Now that you know the differences between S and D mode and when to use them properly, if you are driving an automatic transmission car, don't forget to use them accordingly, for your own safety on the road! With care from PTT Lubricants 💙
