When stopping at the red light, should we shift into D gear or N gear?

Which gear should I go into while waiting at the red light? The most debatable problem among automatic transmission car drivers!

Today, PTT Lubricants has brought you the answer to one of the most asked questions: when stopping at the red light, should I shift into D gear or N gear? Which is the right gear to use for everyone’s safety?

Some automatic transmission car users, when stopping at the red light, will remain in D gear while some other people will choose N gear instead. For those people who choose D gear, they tend to believe that constantly switching gears will shorten the service life of it. Whereas people who choose to shift to N gear, on the other hand, often reason that it is more convenient and safer. In fact, both ways are okay to do so.

In case of stopping at a short traffic light or less than 30 seconds

In the case where the cars are not completely stopped and can still go forward slightly during the red light, it is recommended to remain in D gear and step on the brake pedal. This will allow the car to go as soon as the car in front moves. However, remember to only be focusing on the road in front and should not spend time doing other activities such as using a mobile phone, putting on makeup, or picking up things to prevent any potential accident.

In case of stopping at a long red light for more than 30 seconds

It is recommended to use N gear or neutral gear, together with the handbrake to prevent the car from moving since it will be easier and more convenient to shift back to position D. Also, do note that switching gears back and forth does not affect the transmission of the car as much as you think. Therefore, choosing N gear with the handbrake is highly recommended when stopping at a red light as it is the most secure way.

Caution: It is not recommended to shift into P gear when stopping at a red light since it is only suitable for parking.

Hope this knowledge will help everyone with choosing the right gear while stopping at the red light, for the convenience and safety when driving on the road. With care from PTT Lubricants 💙
