4 things to check when your motorcycle suddenly shuts off while riding

Suddenly shutting off doesn't just happen with humans. Motorcycles can also shut off too if you don't know this!

For those who use motorcycles on a daily basis, there might be times where you have to encounter problems while riding the bike. One of the most common problems that bikers may encounter is the bike suddenly shutting off.

What could be the causes and how to prevent such problems? Today, PTT Lubricants has the answer for you so that you can fix them in time before any accident happens. Let's see what the causes are!

🔹 Deteriorated spark plugs

A spark plug is the part that helps spark to ignite the combustion chamber, giving the engine the power to run. If the motorcycle suddenly shuts off during the drive, it may be due to the spark plugs. In case the engine won’t start at all, you can assume that the spark plug has completely worn out. If you notice that power or acceleration speed of the engine decreases, or the engine starts to stumble because the spark plug is not fully ignited, it is recommended that you have the spark plug replaced according to the service life of that model as soon as possible.

🔹Deteriorated fuel pump (tick pump)

The fuel pump in the vehicle is responsible for delivering fuel from the fuel tank to the engine. For modern motorcycles that use injectors to inject fuel into the combustion chamber, if the injectors are not maintained as they should be or are used with substandard oil, the fuel pump will be overly heated and can result in major internal wear. The severe wear will prevent the pump from supplying fuel to the injectors. Without enough fuel supplied to the engine, your motorcycle will jerk or shut off while the bike is running at a constant speed.

🔹 Poor quality fuel

As fuel is the main source of a car’s energy and is also the heart that makes the car run, it is important to use high quality fuel from a reliable gas station in order for the engine to be able to work at its full efficiency. However, if you choose to use substandard oil or refueling from an unreliable gas station, that fuel may be contaminated which will finally affect the efficiency of the ignition inside the combustion chamber. In that case, the motorcycle will jerk or shut off during the ride. It is better to only go to a standard gas station and do not refuel with illegal oil.

🔹Clogged air filter

Air filters are responsible for filtering foreign objects such as dust that float in the air preventing them from entering the engine. Therefore, if the air filter is left clogged without maintenance or replacement within the specified period, the air won’t be able to flow through the combustion system enough to meet the engine needs. This can cause the bike to jerk or shut off during a ride. It is recommended that car users regularly check the condition of the air filter. If found to be very dirty, the filter should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent problems that may occur when driving.

And that concludes the main reasons why your motorcycle suddenly shuts off during a drive. Bikers!
