What are the differences between DIN batteries and JIS batteries? Let’s find out!

The “battery” is the device inside the engine that serves as a power source that helps move your car from the moment you start, while you are driving to the moment you turn off the engine.

But do you know which type of battery your car is using?

If you don’t know that there is actually more than one type of battery, today, PTT Lubricants will take you to learn more about different types of battery. Let's see which one is suitable for your car!

DIN Batteries

Even though DIN batteries are often found in European cars, more models of Japanese cars have also started to use DIN batteries as well.

If you are wondering whether your car is using a DIN battery or not, check if your battery has these following qualities:

  • All the top caps of the terminal are even.
  • Terminals or other parts will not protrude from the battery.
  • Cars with DIN batteries can be started easier as they have more starting force than JIS batteries.
  • DIN batteries will have vent holes on the side to release vapors of battery acid (However, some models of the dry DIN batteries may not have these holes as they are closed system batteries.)
  • DIN batteries will have a wing below to hold the battery in place as battery mount in most European cars is located at the bottom. Battery in Japanese cars, on the other hand, is mounted from the top to prevent slipping while driving.
  • DIN batteries are more expensive than JIS batteries.
  • DIN batteries can be placed in various areas, such as the front of the car, the back of the car, under the seat, under the driver's seat. under the footrest, etc.

JIS Batteries

JIS batteries are often found in most Japanese cars and very common in Thailand as they are compatible with many types of vehicles, whether it's a sedan, a pickup truck, or even a big vehicle like a truck.

If you are wondering whether your car is using a JIS battery or not, check if your battery has these following qualities:

  • JIS batteries can have both even and uneven surfaces depending on the type of battery as follows:

- Batteries filled with distilled water can have both an even and uneven surface so that distilled water can be easily added.

- Hybrid batteries can have both even and uneven surfaces.

- Semi-dry batteries can have both even and uneven surfaces.

- Dry batteries will have even surfaces.

  • Unlike DIN batteries, terminals of the JIS batteries will pop out from the battery making the surfaces of the batteries uneven.
  • Most JIS batteries are taller than DIN batteries.
  • JIS batteries are cheaper than DIN batteries.
  • JIS batteries can only be placed under the bonnet.

*Remarks: DO NOT use JIS batteries to replace DIN batteries as it can lead to a short circuit problem that causes sparks and fire in your car.
